Battle between Sheriff Clarke, Milwaukee Co. hits new heights

MILWAUKEE CO. — The budget battle between Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke and County Executive Chris Abele hits new heights.

27 sheriff’s deputies were supposed to lose their jobs under the new county budget. But Sheriff Clarke refused to lay them off as part of the 2012 budget.

On Friday, a Milwaukee County judge decided to put this case off for a week — and therefore, the deputies will remain on the payroll.

The question being argued in court Friday — what power does the sheriff possess? The county says the sheriff is going beyond his constitutional rights by keeping the deputies on the payroll. The sheriff’s lawyers say Clarke has a duty to protect the community regardless of the cost.

The judge did rule Sheriff Clarke does not have unlimited power — the county does have the right to lay off deputies.

Downtown Milwaukee makes top ten list

MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee is making its mark on America. Downtown Milwaukee has been named among the top ten in the nation!

Downtown Milwaukee hit the list at number 10, but according to TopTenz.net, it’s because we have the smallest urban core.

The article credits the areas riverwalk, loft area, museums, colleges and beach access, but what may have put Milwaukee over the top is cleanliness and the ability to easily get around.

Other cities on the list include: Detroit, Seattle, Boston and Miami. Rounding out the top five are Philadelphia, San Francisco, Chicago, Washington, D.C., and New York City as number one.

Two former Walker aides charged in investigation

MILWAUKEE — Two former Milwaukee County workers have been charged with illegal fundraising for Wisconsin Governor Scott Walker, who was Milwaukee County Executive at the time. The charges come as the result of a John Doe investigation that’s already resulted in charges against three other individuals.

Kelly Rindfleisch was charged Thursday with four felony counts of misconduct in office. She was deputy chief of staff for Walker before he became governor in 2011. Rindfleisch is charged with spending significant time raising funds for Brett Davis, an unsuccessful GOP candidate for lieutenant governor in 2010. Rindfleisch will appear in court February 22nd.

Milwaukee might have just squeaked onto a list of the country’s top 10 downtowns, but that’s not stopping community leaders and advocates from celebrating. Recently, it named Milwaukee as the 10th-best downtown in the nation. “Milwaukee likely has the smallest urban core on this list, a fact that certainly hurts the city’s ranking,” the site says... ... St. Paul, Milwaukee face similar downtown dilemmas

A situation in downtown St. Paul sounds oddly familiar to one downtown Milwaukee is facing. St. Paul is in danger of losing its last downtown department store when the Macy’s lease expires at the end of the year, according to the Minneapolis Star Tribune. The city gave the store, then Dayton’s, $6.3 million in 2001 to keep the store there through 2012. Now the city is eager to keep the store open after the lease expires, but some retail experts are pessimistic. “I don’t know if it’s three years or five years, but they’ll be out of here,” the Star Tribune quotes Love Goel, chairman and CEO of Minnetonka-based GVG Capital Group... ... Turkal: Aurora Sinai won't close

Aurora Health Care CEO Dr. Nick Turkal said he is committed to always providing services at Aurora Sinai Medical Center, but changes need to be made in the months ahead to make it work. "The time has come for a thoughtful solution to the community-wide challenge of providing health services to Milwaukee's underserved," Turkal said in a letter to Milwaukee-area business executives. "We have listened to your concerns and understand that cost shifting to businesses is not an option." The downtown hospital has lost $107 million over the last decade and is projected to lose another $30 million this year if nothing changes... ... Read More
